CLT – Cross laminated timber

Key technical data

PFEIFER CLT is a large-format solid timber panel with maximum 15 layers of timber lamellae glued crosswise. Dried, strength- and quality-assorted, planed timber lamellae made of European conifer wood as well as formaldehyde-free polyurethane (PU) adhesive are used.

The orientation principle

PFEIFER CLT relies on standardisation

The fibre orientation of the outermost ply is the bearing direction. Thanks to the use of dual plies, meaning top plies whose fibre orientation is the same (ss), the longitudinal or cross-stiffness or load bearing capacity of the panel can be increased on purpose. This purposeful change in the panel structure also increases its fire resistance. In case of special requirements towards appearance, changes in the structure can yield uniform visuals. PFEIFER CLT can theoretically be manufactured with up to 15 plies of cross-laminated wood lamellas.

CROSSWISE TOP PLY

Top plies in the crosswise direction to the panels (DQ) are mainly used for wall elements. Their bearing direction is vertical. DQ panels consist of three to five plies as standard. Production widths: up to 3.10 m.

LONGITUDINAL TOP PLY

CLT panels with top plies in longitudinal direction to the panel (DL) are primarily used for ceiling and roof elements. Their bearing direction is horizontal. They usually consist of three to seven plies.

PFEIFER CLT relies on visual appearance

Wood is a natural product that swells and contracts depending on its changing moisture content. Careful technical drying counter-acts this effect. PFEIFER CLT is dispatched with a moisture content of at least 12 % +/- 2 % to minimise the formation of cracks and visible gaps. Thanks to expert processing the material achieves an excellent product quality. Our wood panels are available in various visible appearance classes for different applications, while all panels are sanded to a certain visible quality. The individual lamellas are sorted on the basis of defined criteria.

Area of application

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

Purely structural components for subsequent cladding (e.g., with plasterboards or 3-layer boards)

INDUSTRIAL AREA QUALITY (ISQ)

Visible components in subordinate areas, e.g., in commercial and industrial buildings or which are noticeable at a greater distance (e.g., canopies), can only be used to a limited extent in residential areas

Living area quality (WSQ)

Visible components, especially for living areas. But also for kindergartens, schools and office areas. Treatment of the surface (on site) recommended (e.g., with glazes, UV protection, ...)

Requirements on the surface

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

No visual requirements on the surface, purely strength-oriented features (C24) with isolated joints, fall-off branches in the top layer, glue penetration as well as individual pressure points and dirt can occur, discolouration (e.g., blueness) possible, glue penetration possible

INDUSTRIAL AREA QUALITY (ISQ)

Medium requirements, increased optical criteria for cover lamellas, individual narrow joints; slight discolouration is possible

Living area quality (WSQ)

High requirement, special requirements with regard to a homogeneous surface structure and lamella quality, occasionally minor/slight discolouration possible

Production-related technical information

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

Finger-jointing visible in the cover lamellae, without glueing the narrow sides

INDUSTRIAL AREA QUALITY (ISQ)

Finger-jointing visible in the cover lamellae, to avoid shrinkage cracks, narrow-side glueing is dispensed with

Living area quality (WSQ)

Finger-jointing visible in the cover lamellae, to avoid shrinkage cracks, narrow-side glueing is dispensed with.

Chamfer

INDUSTRIAL QUALITY (IQ)

Without chamfer

INDUSTRIAL AREA QUALITY (ISQ)

Chamfer (approx. 5 mm) for DL boards (at the component edges), DQ without chamfer

Living area quality (WSQ)

Chamfer (approx. 5 mm) for DL boards (at the component edges), DQ without chamfer

Applies to all: Wood is a natural product, therefore: as with all structural solid wood products, crack and joint formation because of shrinkage to the later equilibrium moisture content (EMC) in the state of use is product-specific and cannot be avoided. The narrow sides are not glued.

Notes:
  • Visible surfaces should always be sampled: contact us
  • Exact criteria (e.g., branch sizes,...) of the surface options: on request
  • Quality surfaces are possible on one side or both sides; the optical criteria do not apply to the narrow/front sides and machining edges
  • For WSQ surfaces, changing the panel structure may be necessary
